notes
Notes:
1. Dates given in the boxes refer to the decade of the most recent observation reported in the published literature.
2. Mortality and/or alterations in recruitment are suspected where population declines have occurred.
3. Congenital deformities in snapping turtles were observed in field collected eggs hatched in the laboratory.
4. In addition to the effects noted for wild populations, ranch mink raised on Great Lakes fish in the 1980s showed mortalities, reproductive effects and biochemical changes.
Organochlorines are the class of chemicals most likely associated with these effects. Considerable research has been directed towards DDT, PCBs, HCB, and dioxin (TCDD), yet it is difficult in the field to establish direct causality between a particular chemical and an effect. Eggshell thinning as a result of DDT/DDE exposure is the only definitively established causal relationship among species in the wild.
